Promise fulfilled

Commercial Appeal editorial on Stax Music Academy, Wednesday, July 01, 2009

By

It seems like only yesterday that Stax Music Academy opened in South Memphis on the site of the city’s most famous recording studio.

Actually, it was 2000, and its potential as a productive laboratory for the development of local musical talent is being fulfilled.

This summer academy students Tasmine Ballentine, Ricardo Canady and Ashton Riker are raising money to pay room and board in Boston so they can take advantage of scholarships they’ve won to continue their studies at Berklee College of Music from July 13 to August 14.

Ballentine, 17, and Riker, 18, are vocalists, Canady an alto saxophonist. All are planning on musical careers, and a few weeks at the famed Boston music school could be a big step in that direction.
