Most of all, the Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist has demonstrated
his allegiance to his home town and its musical future by returning to
Memphis from Nashville and serving as the Stax Music Academy's artist
in residence since 2006.
Whalum has worked with the likes of David Benoit, Michael Franks,
Nancy Wilson, Luther Vandross, Barbra Streisand, Quincy Jones and
Whitney Houston.
He brings an international reputation to Soulsville, which should
raise its profile, help with fundraising and serve as an inspiration to
budding musicians.
He replaces Deanie Parker, a Stax veteran who served as the
foundation's CEO for many years and stepped back into the role
following the departure of Marc Willis last year.
Whalum's assets combined with the business and marketing experience
of Mark Wender, the new chief operating officer, raise expectations for
success at the South Memphis museum and school for many years to come.
