Founding

What started out as Satellite Records in 1957 soon became Stax Records in 1961, a portmanteau using the last name of the founder, Jim STewart and his sister Estelle AXton who had joined him in the business early on. Both were white businesspeople that fell in love with Black music. Located in the heart of the neighborhood that became known as Soulsville USA, the record label quickly shot to superstardom as an independent Black record label with a multiracial staff of artists, producers, and writers.

Demolished in 1989,  a group of busness leaders for former Stax Artists had a vision and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music stands today the original site of Stax, and draws nearly 60,000 people a year, all in all visited by more than one million people in its 21 years in existence.
